Why Should Choose Induction Heating Technology for Part Hardening and Tempering Process?

In industry, parts often have to undergo a heat treatment to meet working conditions. After heat treatment, the microstructure, hardness, tensile strength and yield strength of the parts will be greatly improved. Therefore, heat treatment is an important process in parts processing.

Heat treatment can include quenching, tempering, annealing, normalizing, etc. and will be applied to the production process according to different working conditions. Here we will discuss which equipment can be used for the quenching and tempering process. Compared with conventional methods, induction heating technology has many advantages in quenching and tempering the heat treatment process.

Induction heating offers many advantages to the manufacturing process as it is a fast, energy efficient, flameless method of heating conductive materials. A typical system includes an inductive power supply, an inductor with copper coils, and a cooler or cooling unit. Current flows through the coil to generate an electromagnetic alternating magnetic field. When a conductive part is placed in the coil, current flows. The current is combined with the resistive properties of the conductive portion to generate heat.

So what are the benefits of induction heating for steel quenching and tempering?

1. Flexibility:
Induction heating systems require no warm-up time and machine downtime, and then you can start or stop the machine according to your production needs.
In most cases, different sizes and grades of material must be tempered at different tempering temperatures. But conventional machines are difficult to achieve temperature control. If the rod or tube is heated at a high temperature for a long time, the steel will decarburize. In contrast, induction heating systems achieve different temperature controls, controlled by the output power. This is important to meet different quality requirements for different types of rod or tube.

2. Uniformity of hardness and structure
The microstructure of steel undergoes the following changes in the heat treatment process: ferrite-austenite-martensite, sorbite. But only if the steel is heated and cooled evenly can the structure be changed uniformly. If not fully converted, the hardness, toughness and tensile strength will be compromised, resulting in materials that cannot meet the requirements of practical applications. In an induction heating system, all heating temperatures are monitored and controlled so that the structure can transform well and remain in a steady state.

3. Very low maintenanc
Compared to conventional furnaces, induction heating furnaces only need annual maintenance of induction heating coils. Other parts just need to be checked regularly.
